4/25 Cathy Segal Garcia Vocal Workshop

Hello students of jazz singing! There are so many wonderful things to learn and become great at, some of it is technical, some is logical actions, and some is philosophical!
We are all different people, with different abilities, different desires, and different problems. What you as an individual are ready to confront and learn is so very important…and that is why a great teacher will know many things, and narrow down the information to what YOU need! There are different levels of depth of the information. Yes, I am a Professional of many years, very deeply into jazz…but I am also very good at breaking down the information to simple sections, so that beginners through advanced singers can get the information they need to move ahead!
What will I teach you?
1) Voice technique: I will explain to you how the instrument “the voice” works. I will give you simple scales and tools that you can practice with…so that you can build your voice in the
correct way, and you can check for YOUR precise problems and know how to fix them.
2) Language: Let’s make sure you understand all the words you are singing, and make your pronunciation great!
3) Phrasing: Once you understand the lyrics you are singing, the way you sing the sentences becomes easier to do! But that’s not all that phrasing is for a jazz singer! Playing with rhythm and loving how each note relates to each chord that is being played, is really where great jazz singing lives! (Phrasing MUST get into the next two points... “groove” and “changing the melody notes”)
4) Groove: One of the most overlooked, and incredibly important points about jazz singing, is feeling the “groove” of every song, no matter which style you are singing! (swing, ballad, bossa, etc) You absolutely MUST be relating to the “time” of the song, like a clock that never stops ticking! We’ll do some fun exercises that are simple, but can be challenging!
5) Changing the melody notes: I will teach you the basic things that you need to know before you adventure into changing melody. It’s very exciting and rewarding to be successful at this! This is where your true individual personality comes out!
6) Scat: Guess what! All of us can scat, even YOU! Of course, we all must practice to get better at anything. But if you understand the basic information of what scatting is, and how to do it…you can know what to practice! I guarantee you will leave the lesson scatting!
7) Songs: Do you know how to pick the songs to sing? Do you know your keys that you sing in, and how to decide that? How big should your repertoire be? Do you need charts (lead sheets)?
8) Charts: What do the musicians need from you on paper? What should the charts look like? Would you like to learn how to make your own?
9) Musicians: What to say to musicians? How to act around them? What do they want from you?
10) Music Theory: How much music theory do you need to know?
11) Count offs: How do you count off the songs (give the time and feel)? Each style and tempo is different, right?
12) Philosophy: I am a positive person. I believe we are capable of almost anything! We have to want it, and work hard for it. But we must enjoy the journey too! I see many correlations between jazz, vocal technique, and life. Personally, I love dedication and commitment to singing, and art, and jazz! I feel that everyone has their own path, and wherever they are on that path is absolutely fine and right! If you want to get better at jazz singing, no matter what your level is, I will be so very happy to help lead you in the good direction!
